John Roberts Square – The Heart of Winterval

John Roberts Square is named after the 18th century architect, whose work made a significant impact on the city.

So it seems quite fitting that the heart of Winterval is located in this leafy open pedestrianised area, to accommodate the Rotary Memorial Ribbon Tree, the choirs, the carousel, the nativity Crib and Santa’s Giant Post box – we’ve managed to squeeze it all into the heart of the city.

Activities include

The Christmas Carousel

The young and the young at heart will be drawn to the beautiful sights and sounds of this vintage musical carousel.  Get on board one of the impressive horses, bedecked in an array of colour and light!  Enjoy a gentle trot or a more bracing gallop – a magical ride for all ages! Cost 3 Euro. No booking required.

Santa’s Post Box

Make sure the Big Man gets your letter on time!  All post to the North Pole can be posted at the gigantic Spraoi – built Post Box, in the Centre of John Roberts Square. FREE

Rotary Club Christmas Memorial Ribbon Appeal

Take a minute to reflect on those we have lost and won’t be around to enjoy the wonder of Christmas this year.  In 1998 the first Christmas Memorial Tree appeal was established by the Rotary Club of Waterford to help raise funds for the development of a local hospice facility. The idea conceived in Waterford has now raised over €1 Million for charities in Ireland.

Just complete a small memorial card at the collection points. These cards are attached to a commemorative bow and each bow is then placed on the giant Christmas Tree .

Carol Singing

Schools and voluntary groups will be invited to come carol singing in a specially designated area of the Square, and are welcome to collect donations for their various charities.

Crib at the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity

This beautiful Cathedral, designed by John Roberts is a central focus of this area.  A beautiful Christmas Crib, complete with life size animals and figures will feature outside the Cathedral for the month of December.

WLR FM Lions Club Christmas Appeal

WLR FM will launch Lions Club Christmas Appeal in John Roberts Square on December 8th with a live outside broadcast.  Then the three day auction for the Appeal will run from Dec. 19th to Dec. 21st with live broadcasts all day from John Roberts Square.

On December 15th the very popular WLR FM Concert of Christmas Music takes place in the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity, hosted by Billy McCarthy and conducted by Kevin O’Carroll, starting at 4pm
