  • WIT Choral Programme Christmas Concert

    The six choirs of the WIT Choral Programme present their annual Christmas concert. This festive event will feature almost two hundred young singers aged between five and eighteen, all performing Christmas favourites, old and new.

    The concert takes place in the WIT Chapel on College Street and tickets will be available on the door.

  • A Vocalis Christmas

    Classical favourites from a quality choral octet.

    Stunning Choral Concert in prospect from Vocalis

    Lovers of quality choral music are in for a real treat this December as the chamber ensemble Vocalis is set to return to the stage in Waterford.  The concert, which will be in De La Salle College Chapel on December 13th at 8.00pm, will include music from the 17th Century to the 20th Century.

    Heinrich Schutz is regarded as the most important German composer before J.S. Bach and spent three years in Venice sturying with Giovanni Gabrielli.  His Hodie Christus Natus est is mostly in six parts but does have a lovely duet section also.  The concert also includes Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols which is a setting of seven Christmas Carols written in 1942 accompanied by concert harp.  With a hugely entertaining extended setting of The Twelve Days of Christmas by Bob Chilcott and a number of inventively arranged Christmas Carols this concert is certain to be a musical highlight on a dark December evening.

    Vocalis is an octet of singers all of whom have performed professionally with some of Ireland’s leading choirs including Anúna and The National Chamber Choir and the Irish Youth Chamber Choir. Accompanied by Claire O’Donnell (Concert Harp) and Dr Marian Ingoldsby (Piano) the ensemble is directed by Kevin O’Carroll.

  • Voices at Christchurch Cathedral

    ‘Voices’ is set to be an enchanting, candlelit evening of 10th-13th Century Gregorian Chant, medieval polyphony, Georgian Orthodox Chant and old Irish Carols from the Wexford tradition.

    Bringing to light a new generation of singers in Ireland; the voices are Hannah Fahey (Mezzo), Sinead Boomsma (Soprano), Cara Morrissey-Gleeson (Contralto) and Sinead McGuire (Contralto), all graduates of the B.A. in Voice and Dance at the University of Limerick.

    This rich blend of voices, create a sound that can only be obtained from years of training and singing together. The group have worked with international chant scholars, Georgian Chant scholars and Irish song collectors and have toured and recorded with their University ensemble ‘Hibernia’. Both Hannah Fahey and Sinead McGuire are current students of the M.A. in Ritual Chant and Song at the Irish World Academy and active members of Lucernarium and Sonas: The UL Global Choir.

    ‘Voices’ promises to be a very special celebration of the beauty of the human voice through a diverse and captivating spiritual repertoire.   An evening of raw beauty and simplicity. Give yourself a treat and spend some time in  quiet contemplation that is guaranteed to revive your spirits!

    For one morning only, the foyer of Central Library in Lady Lane will be transformed into a festive winter wonderland. Join us from 11am for mince pies and other festive treats. Relax and take time out from the Christmas mayhem as our library choir performs carols, there will also be storytelling for toddlers and for the grownups some readings from our favourite Christmas tales. This celebration of the more traditional side of Christmas is brought to you by The Waterford Europe Direct Centre which is based at Central Library.

    This event is a celebration of the more traditional side of Christmas and a showcase of the library’s work at the heart of the community. It is a chance for all the groups who met in the library during the year to come together with library staff and let Waterford see what they are doing and invite others to join up in 2013. Groups include creative writing groups, knitting circle, Parent and Toddler Groups, Computer Classes, book clubs, Library Choir and many others.

    The Early Byrds are a group of musicians from Dublin and the South-East who have a love of early music and play and sing music from the Renaissance era in period costumes. They comprise of a viol consort, a recorder consort and a group of madrigal singers, performing music by William Byrd, Thomas Tallis, John Weelkes, Orlando Gibbons and others. Come and experience a taste of the 17th Century in the historic St Patrick's Church in Waterford. The evening promises to be a memorable glimpse of times past.
